Hello Dreamland
is a sweet invitation to accept that relaxing time
just before sleep; its gentle rhythm is like being rocked, and the
images from the lyrics sweep through the colors of a fading rainbow...
Altogether a lovely way to drift off. Some of the lyrics:
It's a landscape all aglow,
Dappled gold and indigo
Without worry, without care;
Come with me, I'll take you there
Hello Dreamland...

The first of the sleepy-time journeys,
The Piper
is a bit like a slow dance, evoking the sense of a medieval
Celtic piper weaving his way across green hills and valleys.
He pipes for the children, for lasses and lads
But old folks don't hear him, not moms and not dads;
His ballads are magic, his sweet serenade
Sends wee ones to slumber, from glen to the glade...

Now we're into the real stuff every kid knows about Dreamland
places like
CANDY ISLAND.
With the relaxed ukulele and slide steel guitar weaving
underneath, this Hawaiian-flavored treat is a tremendous
inducement to pull up the covers and drift sweetly off:
Floating on a cloud over Candy Island
Lemonade showers fall, bubblegum seagulls call
Gliding way up high over Candy island
Marshmallow yellow hills, blooming with taffy-dills...

This one is just great! Reminiscent of Glen Miller's soft big band sound,
MOONBEAM LULLABY
may even remind you of the some of the music YOUR folks used to listen
to! Images of ballrooms and stardust, and the soft whisper of
brushed snare drums in a slow jazz rhythm all combine in a wonderful way:
Riding on a moonbeam through the sky
Singin' a Moonbeam Lullaby
While everyone in tune, sings with the moon,
A crazy little Moonbeam Lullaby...

A gorgeous traditional lullaby,
COUNTING SHEEP
will have your child doing a little counting too!
The gentle rocking rhythm, underscored with a relaxing bass line
like a sleeping heartbeat, and the sweet low tinkle of a toy piano
for accent. Wonderful.
Not quite awake and yet not quite asleep
Dozy and cozy, and I'm counting sheep
Fluffy white wooly ones all in a line,
All of them friendly, and all of them mine...

Like a soft summer night at an old hacienda,
EVERYTHING IS OKAY
is all about the little things we need to assure ourselves that
we and the ones we love are safe and warm. A gentle mariachi
sound pervades this one, with muted trumpets and whispering violins.
Open the door just a little bit more
So light from the hallway spreads out on the floor
Line up the animals, put them all near
So no one is missing and everyone's here...

ANGEL WATCH OVER ME
puts a little country flavor into tuck-me-in time. No kid feels
as safe as when an angel is standing guard, ready to ward off bad dreams.
Angel watch over me, hear my evening prayer
Hear my every wish, know my every care;
Angel watch over me, guide me through the night
Safe within your wings, until morning light...

Something grownups tend to forget is the power of the
The Wishing Well
to bring everything we want and need. And what could be more
comforting and relaxing than drifting off with a penny's worth of
wishes coming your way?
Toss a penny in and then begin
Just close your eyes, and wait for your surprise
At the Wishing Well, where wishes dwell
Just for you...
|
|
|
|
|
And how would a parent spend that penny?
I WISH YOU LOVE
is the sweet affirmative thought that puts the snuggle into the last
few little adjustments, feet just so, hands just so, pillow fluffed up
just right ... as you reach out and brush some hair from a warm little
face, and your child's breath smoothes into a true sleeping rhythm.
Only good things I wish for you
May all your hopes and dreams come true;
With everything I'm thinking of,
Most of all I wish you love...
